Washington State Rural Locum Tenens Program
"Recognizing the critical shortage of health care providers in rural communities throughout the state, the state legislature created the Washington Rural Locum Tenens Program in 1991, a temporary substitute provider program. This is a statewide program administered by the Eastern Washington Area Health Education Center at Washington State University.
This program, managed by the AHEC, WSU Extension on behalf of the State, matches qualified locum tenens with rural clinics, hospitals and health care professionals in need of temporary assistance. The AHEC serves as a clearinghouse and referral system that screens applicants, verifies licensure, and refers locum tenens to communities in need."
Projects Associate Bettie Rundlett further explains that, until September of 2006 the program offered financial assistance for travel and lodging to facilities using the services of physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners for short-term temporary periods. Although there is no longer funding available for this benefit, AHEC continues to maintain a database of providers who are interested in locums assignments. All arrangements for employment are made directly between requesting facility and the prospective provider.
